Retaining the scaffold wheel stem inside the tube Here is a close up of the new tubes installed. I then screwed the newly modified plates back on to the table with some hefty deck screws. I don’t have power out to the shop yet so there are 4 extension cords running over to the old garage at the moment. My temporary garage setup in the new shop is working well. Add a couple of welds to each side of the tube. I was able to drill through all 4 plates at a time which made it go a lot faster. Stack them together before drilling them in the drill press. Here is a tip when trying to make duplicate parts.
Prior to welding them on, I measured and marked for 3 holes on each side of the tube to screw the plate back onto the leg. If you have a table that doesn’t have something like this, you might be able to weld directly to the table if it is metal or cut out some metal plates that you could weld the tubing on to then screw to the table. In this case, the table had fancy 1/8″ metal kick plates around the legs so I was able to take those off and weld tubing on to them. If you wanted the stem to be able to pin in, now would be the time to measure and drill the tube for the 3/8″ pins. I cut four pieces of the tubing with my metal chop saw down to ~6″ to match the metal plates that were around the base of each leg. I rummaged through my metal pile and found some 1.5″ tubing that the scaffold wheel stem fit into. The OD of the square scaffold wheel stem is 1 1/4″ so I was able to find some 1 1/2″ tubing I had laying around with 1/16″ wall which is about 16 gauge steel. Since the new shop is up and has 13′ tall walls inside, I quickly realized that working off of a ladder is precarious and not very efficient.
